Pen-spinning is a rage with teens these days and most profitable for some
Don’t be distressed if your teen is spending too much time on the Camfrog website: they are only honing their pen-spinning skills and making friends with teens all over the world.
‘In our Thai chat room we teach new pen-spinning tactics on video. It’s a community for members to talk and get to know each other,’ says Chatchai Songnapawuttikul, the founder of the Thai Camfrog chat room.
The chat room, which originated in the website www.thaispinner.com about two years ago, has some 14,000 members, of whom 5,000 are active pen-spinners and some 20 are definite champs.
‘The feedback is very good. I had to get my own server for the website, because we have some 3,000 visitors every day. In South Korea, where pen- spinning is very popular, they have hundreds of thousands of members. I think the feedback and the interest there are similar to here, but they are better at promoting their sites and have better Internet connections,’ Chatchai says.
Two headed pen
Pens used for spinning are slightly different from regular pens: they are longer and have a head on either end for balance. A spinning pen can cost anything from Bt150 to Bt1,000 depending on the material. Participants are given points for smoothness, continuity and creativity.
Though the very idea of pen- spinning may seem quite nonsensical to most parents, Chatchai’s mother seems to have changed her mind.
‘I didn’t understand what he was doing. My son had graduated with first-class honours in engineering from Kasetsart University. He should have been doing something better than just selling pens.’
But after he proved that this was a hobby he could sell, she became a big supporter.
‘Pen-spinning develops concentration and keeps kids away from online gaming. Our chat site also helps people make friends from other countries,’ Chatchai says.
